The short answer: five checks
Run every vendor through the same five checks, in this order. A tool that fails the first two is a risk even if it is fast.
- Where each answer comes from. Every answer should point to a source passage a reviewer can open.
- Who approves before anything is shared. A named person, recorded, before a buyer sees it.
- The price in writing. A published plan price, or a written quote with the questionnaire count and any caps.
- Portals, formats and exports. The file types and portals your buyers actually send, and the format the answers come back in.
- What happens when a source changes. How an updated policy reaches answers already written, and drafts already sent.
This page is written by AccountMade. We apply the five checks to AccountMade too, and say where it does not fit. Vendor facts below were read on each vendor's own page on 2026-10-20.
Check 1: where each answer comes from
A security reviewer will ask, "where did this sentence come from?" A tool should answer that in one click.
Ask: Does each answer link to a source passage? Is the source your own document, a past questionnaire, or a generic model answer?
What vendors say today: Skypher says every answer includes a Confidence Score and a direct link to the source material4. Conveyor says every answer is backed by sources you've approved, with a citation to the original6. Vanta says it generates responses from a knowledge base of security documentation and previous questionnaires9. AccountMade says each control claim keeps its source, version and approver2.
Pass: you can open the source for any answer. Fail: the tool returns an answer with no source or only a confidence number.
Check 3: the published price and what it includes
Price is a buying check because most vendors do not publish one. Ask for the price in writing, with the number of questionnaires, users and any add-ons.
What vendors publish today: AccountMade lists Pro at $99 per user a month1, with unlimited drafts and up to 10 new drafts a day per user1. Skypher offers a custom quote5. Conveyor shows a Free plan at $0 a year6 with no access to Questionnaire Automation6. Vanta's pricing page lists no plan price and asks buyers to request a demo7; it lists 25 questionnaires a year on Plus7 and 144 on Professional7. Drata's plans page shows no prices8, and lists "Questionnaire Assistance for Up to 100 Questionnaires" under Foundation8.
A caution on third-party prices. Skypher's post lists Conveyor as "Free tier available; from $9,600/year"4; Conveyor's own pricing page shows no such figure. Wolfia, a competitor, says Responsive is the only tool in its list that publishes a starting price11. Use the vendor's own page or a written quote, not a comparison post.
Pass: a price or a written quote with the questionnaire cap. Fail: "contact sales" with no cap stated.
Check 4: portals, formats and exports
List the last ten questionnaires you received. How many were spreadsheets, Word files, PDFs and portals? Test the vendor on the worst one.
Ask: Which portals does it fill, by name? Does it return the file in the original format? What can you export?
What vendors say today: Skypher says it has over 50 proprietary portal connectors4. Conveyor lists a "Browser extension for customer portals"6. Vanta says it handles a spreadsheet, document or third-party portal9 and exports the questionnaire back into the original format9. Drata lists "Support for Word, PDF, and TXT files"8. AccountMade exports to DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, HTML and PDF1; we found no portal connectors or browser extension listed on AccountMade's pages.
Pass: your worst questionnaire completes in the trial. Fail: the vendor demos only its easiest format.
Check 5: what happens when a source changes
Policies change. The risk is an old answer that is still in a draft or already sent to a buyer.
Ask: When a source is replaced, which answers and drafts change? Can you see what was already sent?
What vendors say today: AccountMade marks a claim in review wherever a draft uses it3, and its pricing page lists "A source on every line, with an alert if a fact changes"1. Vanta says its knowledge base pulls in the latest Vanta policy documentation9. Conveyor's plan table lists "Audit & version controls"6.
Pass: you can find every answer that used the old source. Fail: you update a document and hope.

Where each kind of tool fits
Tools sort into four groups. Pick the group first, then the vendor.
- Compliance platform with questionnaire tiers. Vanta and Drata. Best when audit evidence and questionnaires should share one system. Vanta lists "Automated evidence collection for audit readiness"7. Questionnaire counts are capped by tier: Plus lists 25 a year7.
- Trust center first. Drata's SafeBase and Conveyor. Best when buyers can self-serve documents. Drata's page names Trust Center and AI Questionnaire Assistance tiers8.
- Questionnaire tool. Skypher is the clearest example in our sources, and it says it is optimized for teams handling 20 plus questionnaires per year4.
- Proposal library. Loopio is described by Vanta's list as an RFP response software provider that can also help with DDQs and security questionnaires10. Best when RFPs are the main volume.
Which GRC software offers the best questionnaire automation? The honest answer is the one whose questionnaire cap and formats fit your volume. Compare the cap first.
Where AccountMade fits, and where it does not
AccountMade fits a small security or sales-engineering team that wants every answer to cite an approved claim and wait for approval. Pro is $99 per user a month1; Business is $149 per user a month, and above 10 users it is a demo booking1; viewers and external recipients are free1.
It does not fit if you need SAML SSO or SCIM1, a customer API, contractual retention or data residency1, portal connectors, a published accuracy figure, or compliance automation in the same product. AccountMade publishes no accuracy figure; we found none on the pages we checked.
Do not take our word for any of it. Run your three hardest questionnaires through each trial. AccountMade's trial is free for 14 days with no card1.
Questions buyers ask
- Which GRC software offers the best security questionnaire automation?
- We found no independent test. Vanta and Drata both sell questionnaire automation inside plans with caps: Vanta lists 25 questionnaires a year on Plus7 and 144 on Professional7; Drata lists up to 100 under Foundation8. Compare the cap and your formats first.
- What sources should feed compliance questionnaire automation?
- Use approved sources only: current policies, security documents and past approved answers. Vanta builds its knowledge base from previous questionnaires and documents and policies uploaded to Vanta9; AccountMade uses approved claims that each keep a source, version and approver2.
- Which systems provide the most reliable traceability for security questionnaire automation?
- Look for a link from each answer to a source passage and an approver. Skypher links each answer to its source4, Conveyor cites the original source6, and AccountMade records source, version and approver per claim2. None of these is an independent test.
- Trust center vs security questionnaire: which saves more effort?
- A trust center lets buyers self-serve documents; a questionnaire tool answers the questions they still send. Drata's plans page lists both Trust Center and AI Questionnaire Assistance tiers8. Count which your buyers send more of before choosing.
Sources and last-checked dates
Every source below was read on 2026-10-20. Wolfia's best-of list is dated February 16, 202611 and ranks Wolfia first11; we use it only for the one sentence about published prices and label it as a competitor's statement. Drata's plans page returned a bot challenge to our fetch tool, so its text was captured with a page-reading tool; check drata.com/plans before relying on a Drata detail. If a figure here differs from the vendor's page today, the vendor's page wins.
