Issue 01 / September 8, 2026

Make the software evaluation easier to complete.

A deployment comparison, a cost model and a clear test plan answer different buyer questions. This issue brings the three together.

Explain the product boundary early.

WorkOS’s SSO guide explains the difference between integrating its standalone API and using AuthKit. It also makes clear that the standalone API leaves user-database management to the application. That detail helps an engineer identify the work remaining in their own system.

Baseten uses a deployment comparison to put cloud, self-hosted and hybrid options against requirements such as data control, residency and compute capacity. The table gives a buyer a way to narrow the options before a call.

The useful pattern is straightforward: show what the customer keeps, what the vendor operates and which decisions remain open. The pages demonstrate a communication approach; they do not establish its effect on sales.

Include adoption in the business case.

In the calculator’s illustrative example, annual benefits of $72,000 become $50,400 at 70% adoption. With $20,000 of implementation, integration and training costs plus $22,000 of annual costs, the first-year net benefit is $8,400. At 50% adoption, it falls to −$6,000.

Changing one assumption can reverse the decision. Use an observed baseline when you have one, and keep an estimate labeled until the evaluation replaces it.

Test your own assumptions →

Turn one product claim into a test.

Take a claim from the next sales deck. Write down the starting condition, the result the buyer needs, the measurement method and the person who will accept the result. If you cannot name those four things, the evaluation needs a more precise question.

Prepare the POC criteria →

Use the research in your own work.

For a workshop, use this 20-minute exercise: compare a vendor’s deployment options (5 minutes), change the cost model’s adoption assumption (5 minutes), write one measurable POC criterion (5 minutes), then review what each person would need to approve the next step (5 minutes).
