Self-serve and sales-assisted entry signals in 201 software records

Sixty-four of 201 records contained both self-serve and sales-assisted entry language. Forty-seven contained neither matched signal, which is an unanswered-data bucket rather than a third go-to-market motion.

What the codes mean

We coded each line of the full pricing-model field in all 201 records. Self-serve signals include affirmative self-serve language, free plans or trials, pay-as-you-go, open-source, community, developer, hobby, starter, or on-demand entry. Lines saying no public self-serve or no public free option were excluded. Sales-assisted signals include contact sales, custom pricing or quote, request demo, annual enterprise contract, or explicit sales-assisted language.

The corpus contains historical and archived company material as well as active-company records. Company records were reviewed from 3 to 9 July 2026, but cited source dates vary. These codes describe recorded public language and must not be treated as a current company census.

Stage breakdown

Small cells and purposive company selection prevent causal stage conclusions.

Technical software subset

The five technical categories—data/AI/infrastructure, developer tools, infrastructure/DevOps, API/usage, and security/compliance—contain 84 records. Of those, 40 had both signals, 11 self-serve only, 20 sales-assisted only, and 13 neither. The combination shows that a start path and a purchase path often need separate documentation.

Questions for an evaluation path

  • Can a practitioner test the product without entering procurement or speaking with sales?
  • Which usage, data, identity, support, or deployment threshold changes the commercial path?
  • Can an evaluator see the production requirements before a demo, even when the price is custom?
  • Does the sales-assisted route preserve the work already completed in a self-serve evaluation?

Limits

Stage labels are historical research classifications. The sample was not designed to represent all software companies. No conversion, revenue, velocity, or outcome data was tested, so the table cannot show that stage causes a company to add or remove an entry route.
